Move from Symbolic to Strategic
Build a Board That Does More Than Show Up

Do you want a board that’s more than just your family members to meet the minimum criteria?
Many nonprofit founders start with whoever will say “yes”—often relatives, friends, or former coworkers—just to get their paperwork through. But over time, this well-meaning approach can stall your mission if those board members aren’t equipped or engaged.
In a recent conversation with nonprofit consultant Dr. Susan Nichols, we talked about why boards often fall short—and how to shift them into real partners. Her advice? Build structure, offer support, and communicate clearly. Here are three ways to get started:
Set expectations early.
Create a written board agreement that outlines what members are responsible for—from meeting attendance to fundraising efforts. The clearer you are from day one, the more confident and committed your board becomes.
Offer governance training. Corporate leadership and nonprofit governance aren’t the same. Give your board the tools they need to lead in this space—training builds trust, understanding, and accountability. Strengthen the ED-board relationship. Misalignment between the Executive Director and board is one of the most common pain points. Encourage open communication, mutual respect, and healthy boundaries so your team operates in sync.
You don’t need to settle for a symbolic board. With the right tools and guidance, you can build one that drives your mission forward.
